Mary Hertert – Silk Scarf Painting Class

Mary Hertert will be giving a one-day silk scarf painting class through the Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department on May 24th. The cost is $32.50, which includes the scarf and supplies. To register call 254-3866.

Lenore Crawford Workshop Fees Announced

The fee for the October 12, 13 & 14, 2012 Lenore Crawford workshop has been announced. The total fee is $225, with a $100 deposit due at the July 21st AQuA meeting. The balance of $125 will be due at the September 15th AQuA meeting. No refunds will be given after August 15, 2012.

Lunch is included in your workshop fee and you cannot bring any food into the class/lunch area.

The supply list is posted under “Upcoming Workshops.” If you have any further questions, please contact either Susan Strickland or Kathy Schattleitner.

“Illumination” Jurying Results are In!

Maggie Weiss of Evanston, IL was our juror for the Illumination exhibit and the results are in: Maggie juried 14 quilts and accepted all but three of them for the show.

Her juror’s statement is as follows:

““Illumination” has many current and ancient interpretations including decorated manuscripts, computer graphic algorithms and theological/spiritual enlightenment. Often the work itself presents the sign posts for moving forward, as was the case with the 2012 AQuA submissions. All accepted work synthesized around the effects of light and shadow in natural or outdoor settings, radiating through, reflecting on or illuminating the subject matter. The most successful pieces included a variety of visual contrast in use of line, color, stitching, shape and proportion. The top three juror choices were the most difficult to differentiate and are fine examples of pictorial quilts. It was a pleasure and a bit of an extra bonus to discover a reference to medieval historical phase of “Illumination” in amongst those.

“As juror my mission was to narrow the interpretation in order to present a cohesive group of work. It’s never a simple decision to narrow the field and I do so with great care and caution. This allows me to listen to the work and learn as much as possible as I make distinctions and decisions. It’s always an honor to lend my voice to a jurying process and to have the opportunity to view well crafted fiber art, for which I’m grateful.”

Maggie also selected her top five juror’s picks:

#2 – Kathleen Malvern’s “Illumination of the Dark Age”
#3 – Susan Strickland’s “Just North of Dove Creek”
#4 – Eldrid Schafer’s “Reflecting”
#5 – Nancy Dobson’s “Stuckagain Sunset” (also Member’s Choice)

Lenore Crawford Workshop Update

The Lenore Crawford Workshop will be held October 12, 13 &14, 2012 at the Clarion Inn from 9 am to 4 pm each day. Lunch is included in your class fee, which has not yet been determined. As soon as Kathy S & Susan S have all the final figures, that fee will be posted here.

New Recipes–Yum!

I have added two new recipes (Broccoli Wild Rice Soup from Emily Buchanan and Cauliflower White Bean Dip from Cindy Williams) to “Member Info” >Recipe Favorites. These recipes both came from our Moab retreat. I will be adding a few more as soon as the chefs send them to me. Enjoy!

FAS Moab Retreat Weekend

Twenty-two of us (20 AQuA members) had a great time at the Red Cliffs Lodge outside of Moab this past weekend. We sewed and talked and ate and laughed. It was great fun. The quilting store in Moab (Its Sew Moab) opened for us on Saturday afternoon so that we would not miss an opportunity to replenish our stashes.

Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum Sale/Exhibit

The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum is providing us with another opportunity to display and sell our works. Each member will be allowed to enter one piece for sale. The format is the same as before: 12×12 mat with an 8×8 opening. These mat kits are available for purchase from Carol Patten for $5 each set.

Turn-in day is the May 19th AQuA meeting. Jan Rickman is our chair again for this event. If you have questions, please contact her directly.
