Decorative or plain, made of wood, iron, or wire, the ranchers and homesteaders of the west valued a strong fence. However, a blizzard, flood, or drifting sand blur the function of boundaries or the efficacy of keeping critters in or out. Fences delineate political and social jurisdictions. As a noun, a fence can be an obstacle in an equestrian event, or as a verb, to fence. Fences may support a flower box, have blooms poking thru, or be the star in the idyllic picket fence home. Perhaps it becomes a key lyric for a song, \u201cDon\u2019t Fence Me In\u201d or a metaphor as in \u201csitting on the fence\u201d or \u201cside of the fence.\u201d Members of The Art Quilt Association explore their connection to Fences.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza (Oaks Pennsylvania)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Show dates are September 11-14, 2025<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The member&#8217;s choice was Jacque Weimer nostalgic family piece entitled This Fence.<\/p>\n<p>Juror choices are as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Kathy Reece &#8220;The Price of Eggs&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Marla Ferguson-Leak &#8220;The Plight of the Refugee&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Terry Egan &#8220;Fences of the Dust Bowl&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Congratulations all!<\/p>\n<div><u data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Juror\u2019s Statement&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/lisaflowersross.net\/lisaflowersross\/about-the-artist\/\">Lisa Flowers Ross<\/a>&nbsp;<\/u><\/div>\n<div>The Art Quilt Association group\u2019s theme of fences is unique and timely. As I viewed the artworks, not only was I looking at how well the theme is represented visually, but I also considered the composition and aspects of design such as contrast, value, visual balance, etc.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>The members of the group used varying techniques to create the idea of a fence from quilted lines, to ribbon, cording and fabric. The range of emotions expressed in the artworks varies from the whimsy of a cottage fence that might evoke happy memories, a feeling of safety a coop provides, the sadness one might feel at seeing a person behind the fence to the optimism of finding a way through the fence.
