marge fox I have been fascinated with quilts since living next door to the Amish in Indiana 20 years ago. Originally a die hard traditionalist, I remember exactly the quilt that made me understand them as art (Alison Goss’s 1991 winner at Paducah, Ancient Directions). I confess, I still love a lot of the traditional quilts but when I quilt I want to play. When I am not quilting I like to fly fish, to travel or give parties and I read way too much. I have a lucky life.
"Creation Story" "TXT" Denver National Denver, Colorado, 2006 For the "TXT" exhibit we considered the texts of our lives. Isn't our DNA the very first text of our lives? These exquisite inherited strands begin our personal story and also partially contain our destinies. Unlucky? Suffer a terrible congenital disease. Lucky? Hit the jackpot with a higher IQ. DNA is where we start, but surely the rest of our story is up to us, written with every decision we make, risk taken or avoided, and with each opportunity we act upon to create ourselves. We inherit the first book of our lives, but we write the rest every day with our character. "Creation Story" is not available for sale "DNA2: Biological Bridges" Created for "Bridges", Denver National II, May 2007 "A simple natural moment, unique in all the universes, connects ancient Gypsy blood to Viking blue eyes, devout believers to agnostics, artists to scientists. From this unscripted biological coincidence, you begin." "Lifestream: DNAiii" 2007 "Your DNA, surely the most wondrous miracle of nature, streams back in time to ancient nomadic grandmothers and their hunter/warrior mates. Perhaps also, your DNA flows forward, into the unknown, unimaginable, unborn future of humanity. This is the ride we take, the lifestream of our too short lives." See "Lifestream" in Denver this summer. Juried into "FLOW", an exhibit of works by Mountain States members of the Studio Art Quilt Association, it will appear at Translations Gallery July 20 to August 25, 2007. Artist reception is July 20, 2007. "Ancestral Legacy" was my entry into "Stories of our Ancestor", our recent exhibit at the Johnson Gallery, Mesa State College, here in Grand Juntion. Still exploring the DNA strand's design possibilities, it seems to me that there must be stories in your DNA. Stories of love and loss, of ability and disability, of strength and weakness.
